halfway through act one of translations what precious brainspace i had left got invaded by this disturbing thought of gigantic proportions
what determines colours?
what makes red?what makes black or white or yellow or blue?
something useful i learnt from all the art lessons i took was that red and blue gave you purple red and yellow gave you orange yellow and blue gave you green
and if you mix white with red it gave you pink and vary the amounts of white and pink you get pretty shades of red and pink and if you add white to the other solid colours you get different shades of those colours..
that's the easy part. the hard part comes when you have to differentiate.
no this is not math. i meant if you have to differentiate the shade of colours
at precisely which point does blue become light blue?can someone please tell me? when does red become light red become pink become light pink or turns into hot pink?
scary scary scary..and it gets even scarier!
how do we get maroon? or turqoise? or gold? or champagne colours? or pastels?
do we add chemicals to the original solid colours?if so why are the chemicals this colour in the first place?what are these colours? is colour a substance?
which leads to my next thought..HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE COLOUR?
i guess if someone asks me what the colour gold looks like i'd go:
'it's sort of a yellow kinda colour, with an orangey tinge...'
person: ' huh?yellow with orangey tinge?'
'yeah you know, yellow, but darker, with a slight slight orangey tinge?'
person:' oh...okie...i sort of get it...predominantly yellow huh.'
i can still describe colours by associating it with other colours..but what if someone asks me what YELLOW LOOKED LIKE? what BLACK or WHITE or RED looked like?
what
did these colours look like?
'what does blue look like?'
blue..you know....blue larh!
'yeah but what does it look like?'
it just looks blue!
'okie but what exactly does it look like?'
just blue damnit! which part of blue don't you understand?
'yeah but how does it look like?'
okie go look at the sky or something for god's sake it's blue'
alright perhaps we can describe colours by associating it with objects.....
which leads me to this horrendous thought....
what if i couldn't see?what if i were...BLIND?
that was when i started gulping huge amounts of cold black coffee(ewww) frantically panicking and breaking out in cold sweat..
i don't wanna be blind i don't wanna be blind......
then again..even if i could see colours, it doesn't neccessary mean the colours i see are really what i think they are.
have you ever been asked "what's the colour of his car?"
and you promptly go 'it's dark purple'
and your friend, at the same time, 'black'
and the person who asked the question would start getting confused' so is it black or purple' and what would follow would probably be an endless argument about whether the car's black or purple until the person who asked the question sees the car and goes 'it's black!' and then you would probably go 'fine' and mutter under your breath for the next ten minutes or so ' i know it's dark pureple it's obviously dark purple blind or something these people' and continuely believing defiantly in your heart the damned car was a damned purple.
what i am trying to say is people have deifferent perceptions of colours and we all see and determine colours differently, that's why mauve to me would probably be pink to some colourinsensitive male.
now that thought wasn't very scray at all wasn't it? a nice safe thought......
until this hit me....
what if the colours we saw appeared to everyone differently?
like if the colours were substances, what i call yellow would appear to someone else differently!we might all be recognising different colours, but cause we don't know we see it differently we call that colour yellow!
what if one day what i saw as red wasn't actually red but was white or something
and when i insisted apples are red and everyone would contradict and say no it's white
and the rest of the world saw apples as white and i would be the only one insisting it's red and i would spend my entire life telling myself the apple is white when it is red and everytime someone asks me what's my favourtie colour and i would have to say white when it is red!assuming my fav colour's red that is..but anyway just to set the record straight my fav colour is white.......haha:)
